First introduced in 1971, “Malibu” Barbie quickly became one of the most popular and enduring dolls ever created at Mattel. Sporting for the first time a healthy sun-kissed tan and using the Stacey face-mould, “Malibu” Barbie tapped into the California surf culture with free spirited fun and frolic.
Dressed in her trademark blue tank swimsuit, “Malibu” Barbie comes with her sunglasses and fuzzy yellow beachtowel, just like she did in 1971. She also comes with a bonus fashion. “Lemon Kick” is one of the most sought-after Barbie fashions of the era. Coming at the tail end of the Mod craze, “Lemon Kick” is a gorgeous two-piece playsuit made of sunny yellow pleated chiffon. It’s comprised of sheer palazzo pants, matching solid yellow tap panties, a top trimmed with white braid and pink ribbon, plus a pair of cute yellow pilgrim shoes.
There’s been a lot of keen attention to detail with this reproduction. Issued to mark Barbie’s 50th anniversary, this is the perfect gift for the Barbie fanatic in your family.

Malibu Barbie was a cherished part of my childhood. If only we hadn’t chewed her legs and cut her hair! Thankfully, Mattel helps us relive long lost childhood moments with this excellent reproduction! Unless my memory is terrible, I think this reproduction is exactly how I remember her. Like the other “My Favorite Time Capsule” dolls, Malibu comes packaged in a wonderful window box with reproduction booklet (check out Ken and his collection of interchangeable beards) and collector cards. The piece de resistance is of course the addition of the classic “Lemon Kick” fashion that is so memorable. Thankfully Mattel packaged this delicate garment with tiny plastic staples instead of sewing it to the box. It makes for such easy removal. You’ll get a “kick” out of dressing Barbie in this outfit…and will remember how difficult Malibu Barbie was to dress! This is beautifully made, no squished face mould and full of early 1970s charm to brighten any vintage Barbie collection. She displayed beautifully on her stand and thankfully you’ll probably take better care of her this time around. Highly recommended!

I’ll admit, when I purchased the four currently available My Favorite Barbie dolls, I was least excited about 1971 Malibu Barbie. Mattel created a repro of Malibu Barbie only a few years ago, and I didn’t see the need to do another. Plus, I’m just not that into the Malibu dolls. I was looking forward to seeing the fashion, but that was the extent of my enthusiasm.
Then I received the dolls and de-boxed them, and discovered that the most faithful reproduction was actually this doll. Malibu Barbie doll features a new, more accurate body sculpt, and the face paint and hair texture are almost perfect matches to the original. FAR superior to the previous repro. The Lemon Kick fashion is also lovely, and it’s a vintage fashion I’ve always admired. If you don’t get any of the other dolls, get this one. Five stars.

Mattel Lacking in Product Presentation – Holes in Fabric
Why does Mattel insist on poking a hole through every fine fabric costume on collectible dolls with a needle and thread or plastic t-tie? Just try to remove the two-piece outfit without having a snag in the fabric.
After the millions of dolls they have sold, could their staff devise a way to keep the doll in the box without having to sew the dress to the box?
If the collector wishes to display the doll outside the box, they must try to carefully remove the thread – which still leaves the hole poked through the fabric.
Why would someone pay this much money for a doll with a with holes punched through the fabric?
Madame Alexander – a premier doll manufacturer years – has for years securely fastened their dolls with a simple ribbon or rigid plastic forms. Why can’t Mattel do the same?
Mattel is lacking in Quality Control on this issue, and the same with the Elvis and Priscilla Presley Giftset. Three holes are punched through the fabric of Priscilla’s dress! Plus, the 1962 Bubblecut Anniversary doll has holes punched through the gown and gloves; and, The Original Barbie 50th Anniversary doll has gooey adhesive underneath the swimsuit bodice to keep the suit from falling off. Quality Control at Mattel? It is missing!

I like the packaging. The reproduction ..well the idea and effort. My only complaint is the mold on the face ( I mean every one of these dolls) its smashed in or caved in looking. For the price ..it’s a bit of a disappointment as she really would be a beautiful doll to display if not for the above mentioned flaw.
